Prestigious international award recognises pioneering work of IMAS scientist

IMAS scientist Professor Philip Boyd has been awarded the prestigious G. Evelyn Hutchinson Award by the US-based Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO).

In announcing the award, ASLO recognised Prof Boyd “for his pioneering work on the complex interactions of biogeochemistry, multiple drivers of climate change, and their impacts on ocean planktonic ecosystems”.

Prof Boyd said he was delighted to receive the award from an organisation whose membership includes distinguished freshwater ecologists and oceanographers from 58 countries.

“It’s an honour to receive the Hutchinson Award, which has been previously presented to many of my heroes in the ocean science community overseas, and I thank my colleagues at ASLO,” Prof Boyd said.

IMAS Executive Director Professor Richard Coleman congratulated Prof Boyd and said the Hutchinson Award was further recognition of Prof Boyd’s outstanding research achievements.

“This year Prof Boyd has already been awarded an Australian Laureate Fellowship by the Australian Research Council and today’s announcement is further evidence of his high standing both across Australia and internationally,” Prof Coleman said.

“Through scientists such as Prof Boyd, IMAS is conducting world class marine and Antarctic research across a wide range of themes, including his investigation into whether we can use marine geoengineering to mitigate climate change.”

The G. Evelyn Hutchinson Award has been awarded since 1982 and was named in honour of an eminent British scientist who pioneered the study of freshwater ecosystems and has been described as the ‘Father of Modern Ecology’.

In lending his name to the award, Hutchinson asked that the recipients be scientists who had made considerable contributions to knowledge and whose future work promised a continuing legacy of scientific excellence.
