Tasmanian scientist shortlisted for international science award

University of Tasmania researcher Dr Kirsty Nash is one of just 11 female scientists worldwide shortlisted for a prestigious international award, the Nature Research Awards for Inspiring Science and Innovating Science.

The awards created by the leading science journal Nature are designed to celebrate and support the achievements of leading women in science and those who have encouraged girls and young women to engage with STEM subjects.

To be eligible, female researchers must have completed their higher degrees within the last 10-years and be able to demonstrate achievements in scientific research and outreach.

The winners will be announced in October.

Dr Nash is a Research Fellow in marine ecology at IMAS and the Centre for Marine Socioecology, researching the resilience of marine social-ecological systems, small-scale fisheries and functional ecology.

She also founded the website aKIDemiclife, which aims to help parents and carers cope with the twin pressures of caring responsibilities and academia.

Dr Nash developed the site following her personal experience of juggling a successful research career and parenthood, complicated by the impact of post-natal depression.
