Ocean & Antarctic Governance

The Ocean and Antarctic Governance area makes the results of our scientific research relevant to policy and legal formulation by undertaking cross-disciplinary research. The policy and legal practitioners translate scientific research results into policy-ready language, and communicate it directly to policy and law makers, think-tanks, and organisations.

Our dedicated research further anticipates emerging issues influencing developments in political and legal regimes of the ocean and Antarctica. The challenge is to contribute to developing optimal and sustainable ways of managing Australia's marine jurisdiction and Australian Antarctic Territory, and to manage the sea beyond the limits of national jurisdiction to ensure that future generations reap the natural, social and economic benefits of sustainable management.

Some examples of the policy and law based capacity of IMAS research are provided below. If you have any queries about the Ocean Governance area at IMAS, contact Marcus.Haward@utas.edu.au.
