The University of Tasmania today announced the appointment of Terrence (Terry) Bailey to the position of Executive Director of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies.

The Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, Professor Brian Yates, said Mr Bailey holds qualifications from Deakin and Monash Universities and comes to the University with extensive leadership and management experience, gained from 30 years in the public sector.

“Mr Bailey brings to the IMAS Executive Director’s position strong research, analytical and communication skills, and a passion to deliver a distinguished, strategic, creative and visionary marine and Antarctic program,” Professor Yates said.

“He led the Australian Government’s response to the review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the development of the Australian Government’s Biodiversity Policy Framework.

“Mr Bailey was central to the preparation of world heritage nominations for the Australian Government, including for the Ningaloo Coast, the Australian Convict Sites and the Sydney Opera House nominations.

“He has also provided advice on world heritage properties to all Australian sites, including Macquarie Island and the Great Barrier Reef.

“I look forward to working with Mr Bailey and all IMAS staff and students to ensure the Institute’s continued success as one of the world’s top marine and Antarctic research organisations,” Professor Yates said.

During his career Mr Bailey has held a broad spectrum of positions, including most recently Chief Executive (NSW Office of Environment and Heritage), Director Coastal (National Parks and Wildlife Service, NSW), Assistant Secretary – Strategic Policy (Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts), Assistant Park Manager (Kakadu National Park), and Ranger (Parks Victoria).
